Wood Vinegar
Riverdale specializes in creating small-batch, high-quality kilns that simultaneously produce biochar and wood vinegar. Their designs emphasize durability, efficiency, and suitability for practical farm use. Our systems can process various feedstocks directly from your farm, woodlots, and local community.
Although named ‘wood vinegar,’ it does not necessarily originate from wood. At our farm, over 75% of the raw wood vinegar we produce is derived from crop-based biomass gathered locally, including corn, sunflowers, raspberries, fruit residues, potatoes, tomatoes, garlic, hemp, weeds, and mixed plant waste. The use of various plant parts—such as stalks, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds—substantially influences the levels and balance of the over 200 organic compounds present in wood vinegar.
Our systems convert agricultural and forestry waste into premium biochar and the biostimulant pyroligneous acid (PA) for fruits, vegetables, field crops, mushroom farming and nursery stock. Wood vinegar can be applied via drip irrigation, in-furrow, soil drench, foliar spray, or as a seed treatment.
Our top-loading kiln design accommodates medium- to coarse-sized feedstocks and supports manual removal, or vacuum-assisted unloading. Producing high-quality wood vinegar depends on a clear understanding of feedstock breakdown, temperature, and precise timing during condensation—our kiln designs remove the guesswork from this process. Once produced, the vinegar naturally settles and clarifies.
Among the many natural solutions available, wood vinegar stands out as an organic input that significantly enhances soil fertility, nutrient density, and food flavour. It’s also one of the few bio-stimulants that increase metabolite diversity in food.
Incorporating wood vinegar as an affordable bio-stimulant allowed us to eliminate the need for inputs like fulvic and humic acids, kelp, fish hydrolase, and others, saving us time, money, and reducing confusion. I consistently applied a carbon source to WV, such as compost extracts or teas, simple sugars, biochar, separately or in combination, to maximize effect.
Main advantage: Small-batch production allows plants to respond more effectively when I reapply wood vinegar to the same plant it was originally collected from, whether in pure or blended form. The choice of blend depends on the specific goal, such as boosting yield, flavour, sugar or juice content, reducing maturity times, or suppressing diseases. It’s essential to follow proper dilution rates; using too much or too little can be problematic.
